Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming Out in May

May is the official kickoff to the summer movie season!  Usually, May starts us off with a bang, and is usually a good indicator of what the summer movie season is going to be like over the next four months.  May 2018 isn’t so much a bang as it is a spark, in large part due to Avengers: Infinity War coming out in April.  We get a couple blockbusters, but it’s a relatively quiet month, with a lot of indies and character driven pieces.  Here are my picks for the most exciting movies coming out in May.

5 – FIRST REFORMED (Paul Schrader, May 18)

Paul Schrader is one of the most daring filmmakers we have working today.  Infamous for his collaborations with Martin Scorsese, Schrader’s directorial career is one that is interesting and divisive.  First Reformed stars Ethan Hawke as a guilt ridden priest who gets caught in a wild plot when one of he finds out one of his church goers has a dark secret.  Hawke looks excellent, and word out of the Toronto Film Festival is that this movie is insane and plays very similar to Taxi Driver, which is some of the most intriguing hype of the summer movie season.

4 – BOOK CLUB (Bill Holderman, May 18)

A movie like Book Club is not one I get particularly excited about.  I’m not the demographic for this kind of film, which means I usually skip them when in theaters.  But the trailers for the movie look incredibly fun and funny.  The cast is exceptional, with legendary actresses Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen playing bored wives who get a sexual reawakening when they read Fifty Shade of Grey.  Andy Garcia, Don Johnson, Craig T. Nelson, and Richard Dreyfuss play the objects of their affection, rounding out an impressive cast.  This could be the sleeper hit of the summer.

3 – TULLY (Jason Reitman, May 4)

Jason Reitman’s career is one of two narratives.  When he first started, he came out the gates swinging, with Thank You for SmokingJuno, and Up in the Air, which were all critical and box office success and had tons of awards play.  Young Adult followed, which is still a very good movie and was critically received, but showed a step back for Reitman.  But then came Labor Day, an Oscar play that failed miserably on all fronts.  Following Labor Day came Reitman’s biggest debacle, Men, Women & Children, a movie that made me question if Reitman still had it.  Word on Tully is that it’s a return to form for Reitman and is a semi-sequel to Young Adult.  I’m really excited for the performance for Charlize Theron, as she’s been putting in outstanding work over the last few years and not gotten the recognition she’s deserved.  Here’s hoping for another great Theron performance and for Reitman to get back on track.

2 – DEADPOOL 2 (David Leitch, May 18)

Deadpool is one of my favorite comic book movies ever made.  It is a movie that has great rewatchability and only gets better with each viewing.  Ryan Reynolds was made for the Merc with the Mouth and he only looks to get better in Deadpool 2.  In this sequel, Deadpool must save a kid from the ferocious time traveler, Cable (a jacked Josh Brolin), with the help of a new team of heroes.  Though director Tim Miller isn’t back behind the camera, I have full faith in director David Leitch to deliver as well as he did directing Atomic Blonde.  Get ready for more maximum effort!

1 – SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY (Ron Howard, May 25)

I’ll admit, I was very skeptical when it came to this movie.  The production was troublesome, with director’s changing and rumors about the acting of the film’s star, Alden Ehrenreich.  But bringing Ron Howard on board was a great surprise and gave the movie hope.  But the trailers that have dropped for the film have swayed my opinion drastically.  I cannot wait for this movie.  The tone, the story, the actors, everything feels right.  It has an Ocean’s 11-like plot and Ehrenreich looks spectacular as our smuggling hero.  And can we talk about Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian?  Pitch perfect casting.  And let us not forget that save for the Da Vinci Code series, Howard is one hell of a director.  Rouge One was far better than anyone anticipated being and I feel the same will be the case for Solo, which is why it is my most anticipated movie coming out in May.
